After the successful holding of the introductory course of ArcGIS software training by the Office of Sustainability, an advanced course will also be held. The general information of the course is as follows:

Due to the welcome of the participants of the previous course, the course will be taught by Dr. Mehdi Ahmadi, a faculty member of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of Amirkabir University of Technology and also the head of the Center for Water Studies and Water Technology Development of Amirkabir University of Technology (Fanab).

In order to increase the quality of the course, the number of participants in this course is limited as in the previous course; Therefore, those who intend to register are asked to register as soon as possible and before the capacity of the course is filled (after completing the capacity, it will not be possible to register). It should be noted that participants will receive an international certificate at the end of the course in accordance with the final exam.

GIS Basic Training Course Report

The introductory training course of ArcGIS software was held from February 1 to March 7, 2017 in 6 sessions of 3 hours, on Thursdays. This course was the first series of GIS school training courses of Amirkabir University of Technology. The main goal of the GIS school is to train efficient staff and seals to work on GIS projects, with an emphasis on environmental projects and sustainable development.

In order to improve the quality of teaching the course and to present the materials better with a practical approach to the concepts taught, it was decided to use two teachers to teach the course. Finally, during several meetings and discussions, Dr. Mehdi Ahmadi (faculty member of Amirkabir University of Technology) and Mr. Goodarz Jalalvand (GIS specialist and head of GIS department of Lar Engineering and Consulting Company) with 17 years of experience in Various GIS-related projects took the trouble to teach the introductory course. Dr. Ahmadi, a graduate of the University of Colorado, USA, had extensive experience in teaching GIS at his university, and together with Mr. Jalalvand, who had extensive operational experience in this field, he formed an excellent teaching team.

In order to improve the quality of the course and hold it as well as possible, it was decided to limit the number of participants and finally the introductory course was held with 17 people. The course was held in the seminar hall of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering of Amirkabir University of Technology, which had suitable facilities for holding the course.

Finally, it was designed to gather the participants’ opinions about the different parts of the course. The results of the survey showed high satisfaction of the participants of the course. Other comments, criticisms and suggestions of the participants were also extracted to improve future courses.

What is GIS School?

Today, GIS is one of the most important tools that have many applications in various fields such as environmental engineering, water resources management, urban engineering, urban management, crisis management, etc. Therefore, in most world-class universities and institutes, it is offered as one of the main units in many fields.

Due to the great importance of GIS for students, professionals, and even managers active in areas related to the field of environment and sustainable development, the Office of Sustainability of the Amirkabir University of Technology decided to establish the first GIS school in the country. The purpose of this school was to teach ArcGIS software completely from basic to advanced stages. The point that distinguishes this set from other GIS training courses is its emphasis on the use of ArcGIS software with environmental engineering, water resources management, urban engineering, urban management, and so on. Therefore, the course instructors, namely “Dr. Mehdi Ahmadi” and “Mr. Goodarz Jalalvand”, are active GIS specialists who have a long history of teaching as well as working on projects related to environmental engineering.

Dr. Mehdi Ahmadi is a faculty member of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Amirkabir University of Technology, and a graduate of the University of Colorado, USA, with a long history of teaching ArcGIS software. It should be noted that he specializes in environmental projects and water resources management.

Also, Mr. Goodarz Jalalvand has a master’s degree in geography-geomorphology from the University of Tehran and has 18 years of professional experience in the field of GIS and various projects related to the environment, urban management, water resources management, etc. It should be mentioned that he is currently working as a senior expert in the GIS department at Lar Consulting Engineering Company.

The high ability and experience of the instructors of these courses, both in the academic field and in the field of various environmental projects, has created a unique combination of knowledge, expertise, and high experience in the field of GIS that participation in GIS school, the possibility of benefit. The main purpose of the GIS School is to provide specialized training in ArcGIS software from basic to advanced and to prepare course participants for a variety of GIS-related projects. 6. Natural resources management:

With the help of GIS technology, resources like agriculture, water and forestry can be protected and managed. And with that Foresters can easily monitor the conditions of the forests. Mapping and analyzing provides useful information for experts, about a certain area, including the suitability of the soil for various needs and activities. GIS  helps to determine the type of the soil in a specified area and depending on the type of soil the appropriate steps are determined for any project in the area. The soil map (determined by GIS) of a region is widely used for agricultural development and maximizing the use of the land.

8. Pond landslide map:

Wetland play an important role in the health of the environment and surrounding ecosystems and preserve water for dry periods, thereby keeping the groundwater level almost constant. It also reduces the severity of flooding and suspended materials in water. The GIS determines the area where wetlands and artificial lake projects are needed.

9. Irrigation management:

The availability of water for irrigation purposes in different areas, include information that can be obtained by using the GIS tool.

10. Identification of volcanic hazards:

volcanic hazards for humans life and the environment include volcanic eruptions, volcanic clouds and lava flow. The potential hazards of a volcano in an area can be identified using the history of volcanic activities in the area and implement the information gained in the GIS tool. Therefore, the estimation of the economic losses due to volcanic activities in a regain using the GIS tool is possible.

The GIS is a tool that is used to collect, analyze and store geographic information using software and computer systems, and then the information is used by a verity of entities or used in decision making and planning. Accordingly, GIS  has various applications in different sectors, one of the most important of which is the field of environmental science and engineering.   1. Environmental impact assessment:

Environmental Impact Assessment or EIA is one of the most important measures for the conservation of natural resources and the environment. This categorization helps in identifying areas with higher risk for eventual incident.

  1. Determine the type of land cover and its use:

land cover is the feature that makeup the surface of the earth. Using land means using it for specific purposes. The GIS tool has a role in determining the use of the land, the type of land cover and the changes that occur in different areas of the land. Also the GIS tool determines the changes that occur both naturally and through human activities, and the effects of those changes.

5. Estimating flood damage:

GIS helps to estimate the amount of funds needed to compensate for flood damage. This application is of great importance for providing assurance for companies, because the tool helps to insure their property, assets and etc. in a seatrain area at a reasonable probability level, and the amount of insurance payment needed after a crisis is calculated.
