Paper Recycling at Amirkabir universituy of Technology

Imagine how many papersare used and discarded every day at educational institutions. Term papers and reports, journals and magazines, newspapers, exam booklets, mail, campus fliers, old text books, and the millions of pages of classroom notes are all sources of discarded paper.

Why not bring paper recycling to our university? Students will apply what they learn in their future lives. Participating in a recycling program is aneffective way to teach them environmental education. Moreover, recycling paper is one of the easiest ways to contribute to the recycling system at universities.

Here are some important points of EPA regarding paper recycling:

  1.  Recycling 1 ton of paper saves 17 mature trees, 7,000 gallons of water, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, 2 barrels of oil, and 4,100 kilowatt-hours of electricity — enough energy to power the average American home for five months.
  2. Recycling paper instead of making it from new material generates 74 percent less air pollution and uses 50 percent less water.
  3. Producing recycled paper requires about 60 percent of the energy used to make paper from virgin wood pulp.

In addition, paper recycling program provides an opportunity to:

 4) create a good public image;

5) lower waste disposal costs;

6) extend the life of landfills.

 Considering mentioned benefits, sustainable waste management committee has been interested in setting up a paper recycling program through its faculties and a paper recycling plan is under design. Paper recycling plan will be describe in detail as soon as possible.
