Report: A visit to the second exhibition of electric bicycles (e-bike) in Tehran
The second exhibition of electric bikes is taking place on Khordad 5-10, 1397 (May 26-31, 2018) in the Traffic and Transportation Deputy of the Municipality of Tehran. On Monday, Khordad 7th (May 28th), in addition to visiting the products of this exhibition, we also had interviews with representatives of different companies. Only two iranian companies and one foreign importer were present at the exhibition. It is also possible for the visitors to test the bikes in the parking lot.
The first pavilion belongs to the importer of electric bicycles, such as BMW (Germany), Giant (UK), Ecolt (Germany) and Viva (China). The importer of these bikes in his commentary added:
"Electric bikes are becoming the vehicles of the day and the world's automotive companies compete in the field of electric bicycle manufacturing. The electric bike engines can be placed in the front, center, and rear of the bikes. Since the power of the bikes is often 250 watts and their maximum speed is 25 km/h (EU standard), the main competition has been over the distance traveled. For example, the distance traveled is about 70 km for Mercedes Benz and 100 kilometers for BMW e-bikes. The typical price for these bikes is between 2000 and 4000 euros and of course, Chinese bikes with prices less than 1,000 euros are available. These bikes are imported directly from Britain and Germany. He also added about the after-sales services: "Benz and BMW companies have 10 years of service after the production all over the world, and the Battery cells are also replaceable in Iran. Also, there is no problem in using these bikes for steep slopes and elevation variations, and the auxiliary power of the battery makes it possible to travel without any problems. In Smart models of Mercedes Benz, the battery is charged by generator in downhill or when braking."
The provision of these bikes is currently possible through the direct contact with the importer.
The second pavilion belongs to iranian company, Eliz Docharkh (Elizkhodro) (website). Elizkhodro, in addition to the e-bike, is also involved in the production of electric vehicles. The representative of the company added in his comments:
"in this company, all the technicians and engineers are Iranian. Bicycle batteries are Korean and their cells are packed in Iran. The bike frames are made of aluminum and the speed of these bikes are up to 25 km/hr, similar to foreign products. The travelling distance of this company's products is also estimated at an average of 30 km. Electric bicycles Eliz Docharkh have five years of after-sales service and a 6 month warranty and installment purchase is also possible for organizations."
(The price of Elizkhodro products has now risen from about ۲ to 3 million Rials compared to the above table values.)
Finally in the 3rd pavilion, the products of Arvand Motor Pak company are also presented (website). Same as the products mentioned above, The bike frames are made of aluminum and the speed of the bikes is up to 25 km/hr. The batteries used on these bikes are Panasonic's products and the company is in consultation with Saba Battery Co. for the provision of batteries, so that there is no problem in order to supply this piece inside the country and to use domestic products as well.
In addition to the price range and the distance traveled, the most important difference between some of the products of internal and external productions is the addition of an accelerometer sensor in domestic (iranian) e-bikes (similar to hand grip acceleretor in motorcycles) in a way that the bike can act as an electric motorcycle and does not need to be pedaled. This happens while in Europe such a part is not installed on the bike, and pedaling must be done and the battery will only play an assisting role. Because otherwise, the bike does not make sense and the vehicle actually becomes an electric motorcycle (you can download the catalogs of domestic manufacturing companies from the attachments).
Although holding this exhibition is an effective step in the development of culture for the use of clean transportation systems, but it needs some platforms and contexts that should be provided in advance. If our goal is to promote cycling culture, and especially the use of electric bikes instead of motorcycles, holding a 6-day exhibition with only 3 pavilions in the corner of the parking lot of the Traffic and Transportation Deputy of the Municipality of Tehran with very few visitors and The price of the products at the price level of ordinary motorcycles (and some cases more expensive!) does not solve any problem. Although various advertisements for the use of clean and electric vehicles, use of public transport and the launch of various campaigns, such as Car-free Tuesdays, are important steps in this field but other conditions, platforms and contexts should be provided.
